The company
Puerto Rico Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) is the main airport hub located just outside San Juan, Puerto Rico in the United States. Welcoming over 9.5 million passengers annually and servicing more than 250 daily operations, SJU is considered the busiest airport in the Caribbean. Today, the 1600-acre airport is home to dozens of major airlines and is managed by Aerostar Airport Holdings LLC. The company ensures the highest levels of airport security while offering passengers the best travel experience possible.
The challenge
When Aerostar Airport Holdings began managing SJU airport operations, they knew they needed to upgrade the physical security technologies. Not only were the existing video and access control technologies outdated, but a basic integration between the solutions limited user capabilities. Moving forward, the security team also wanted to be able to add new cutting-edge technologies such as perimeter detection and people counting analytics, but integrating many systems together would be costly, time-consuming, and require constant maintenance. What they really wanted was a unified security platform that could evolve alongside their needs.

The SJU security team manages video, access control, intercom, analytics, and ALPR, all within Security Center. The open platform allows them to further expand operations with the latest technologies.

Results
Today, the security team at SJU uses Security Center to manage over 1500 cameras and 500 airport gates and doors. The Sipelia intercom module enables two-way audio communication at gates and other sensitive areas. The team is also using various analytics solutions including the built-in KiwiVision People Counter analytics, Southwest Microwave perimeter detection, the AutoVu ALPR cameras to better manage crowds, secure airport boundaries, and track vehicles.
Within the unified platform, operators are quickly alerted to door security incidents, wanted vehicles, potential perimeter intrusions, or overly crowded areas. They’re able to see what’s happening and make informed decisions about how to effectively respond to any situation. This heightened response efficiency not only enhances security across the terminals, but it also ensures passengers have a smooth and enjoyable airport experience, so they keep coming back.
