Advanced IP security technology safeguards iconic american monument
The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island upgrade to Genetec™ Security Center to enhance visitor security and safeguard the iconic American monument and surrounding parks.
The company
Recognized as a powerful symbol of freedom and democracy, the Statue of Liberty stands tall just off the shores of New York City in New York, United States (U.S.). In 1886, France gave the Statue of Liberty as gift of friendship to the U.S., and in 1924, the colossal copper statue was designated a national monument. Today, the Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration welcome 4.2 million visitors from around the world.
The challenge
With the large number of visitors regularly on site, maintaining security of this property is a main priority for operators. Moving from an older system to the Genetec Security Center platform was a smooth transition. The open architecture of Security Center offered full compatibility with existing Axis Communications network cameras and Pivot3 storage hardware.
The solution
Flexible & open security system
The flexible system architecture allowed for both the existing system and the new platform to remain online until the official switchover to Security Center, ensuring no downtime during the upgrade.
Central monitoring
Various locations from the point of embarkation to the Liberty Island and other points in between are monitored around the clock by operators from a central location.
Security infrastructure growth
The Statue of Liberty can freely grow their security infrastructure, accommodating a large volume of cameras and unifying other security systems within the same intuitive platform over time.
Improving client experience
Operators can improve the overall visitor experience by alerting National Park Service staff to any long lines, necessary clean-ups or any other possible occurrences.
“The Statue receives a large number of visitors, and has substantial professional staff and facilities. Maintaining the security of the property is an ongoing concern.”

Results
Various locations from the point of embarkation to the Liberty Island, Ellis island and other points in between are monitored around the clock by operators from a central location. Operators can now use Security Center to help improve the overall visitor experience by alerting National Park Service staff to any long lines, necessary clean-ups or any other possible occurrences that they spot when actively monitoring the grounds.
The Statue of Liberty can freely grow their security infrastructure, accommodating a large volume of cameras and unifying other security systems such as IP access control, ALPR, and other security systems within the same intuitive platform over time. The flexible and open security solution also allows the national monument to easily upgrade technology to the latest devices as they become available to the market.
