Creating operational value with unified CCTV

Sydney Trains uses Security Center to manage over 13,000 cameras and 800 Help Points across 300 stations. More than 1,000 employees use the unified platform to access CCTV on workstations and mobile devices, driving operational efficiencies across multiple business areas.

The company

Sydney Trains is the operator of rail services across the metropolitan Sydney area in Australia. For more than 165 years, the railways have played a critical role in the provision of transport services for Sydney residents and visitors. Since 2013, Sydney Trains has operated and maintained the Sydney rail network. The agency also manages the security, CCTV, and customer help points for NSW TrainLink and Transport for NSW. Roughly a million passengers a day pass through the network of 300 railway stations across New South Wales.

The challenge

With such a high volume of people and some of the regional stations un-staffed, operators at Sydney Trains rely on CCTV to get real-time situational awareness. The challenge was its aging CCTV system consisted of several disparate security components including separate video management systems, CCTV monitoring, reporting, CCTV records management, and Help Points. Users also had limited access to integrated software applications on dedicated workstations with specific permissions and network access.

The solution

Easy access to valuable insights

With a single intuitive interface, Security Center has enabled Sydney Trains to democratize access to valuable insights. Staff can now constantly monitor activity and view relevant footage at their own workstation via the Security Center Web Client to help inform their day-to-day activities.

Increased operational value

Facilities management and customer operations teams use Security Center to ensure services such as elevators, vending and ticket machines, and rail infrastructure operate properly. They also use it to examine and overcome issues contributing to delays.

Visibility across the rail network

Security Center helps Sydney Trains detect illegal entry into rail tunnels and other problematic customer behaviors. This informs safety training videos and education initiatives and ensures the safe operation of the rail networks.

Results

Today, the unified security platform at Sydney Trains is one of the largest CCTV deployments in Australia. The team uses Security Center to manage over 13,000 cameras and 800 Help Points across 300 stations. For Sydney Trains, the Australian-based Genetec team was a key selling point. With added support, the team at Sydney Trains felt confident that they could evolve the platform and add new solutions to drive long-term value.

Security operators monitor and review video from a 2000-square-meter state-of-the-art Rail Operations Centre. Within Security Center, the Sipelia Communications Management module allows for seamless use of video intercom (Help Point) services. Simplifying operations has helped to reduce training costs and enhanced the employee experience. The frustrations of using old laborious and disconnected systems are behind them.
