Barox

The ability to easily access, diagnose, and predict security network issues via the combined Genetec Security Center/barox integration, is a breakthrough in the management of security networks.

The barox integration with Security Center can dramatically reduce channel partner site call-outs, support costs, and health & safety risks, whilst optimising system performance, uptime, management, and efficiencies of the security network in the following ways:

  • Alarms from barox switches are sent into the Genetec Alarm Manager
  • Engineers/Operators can access the full security network topology via the barox ‘button’ in Genetec Configurator Tool. Through a variety of intuitive diagnostic tools, barox can establish which component of the network is at fault, including cables and third-party devices, before deciding upon the next action
  • Offline connected devices, such as cameras, can be rebooted either directly from the video stream view in Genetec Security Desk (if the user has the appropriate administration credentials) or from the network topology view accessible via the barox ‘button’ in the Genetec Configurator tool, potentially avoiding costly site visits and health & safety risk altogether
  • The full set of barox SNMP traps, including PoE over-current, can be accessed via Genetec Security Center, providing early fault warning
  • Set-up issues such as IP conflicts can be easily identified and rectified within Genetec Security Center
  • No specialist network qualifications required to support/maintain network
  • Enhanced cyber security features/alarms available within the joint solution
  • The barox/Genetec integration is constantly evolving as a result of client need.  Tamper alarm integration and additional alarms available in the next release.

Critical National Infrastructure

In CNI type applications, there is a need to ensure that system uptime is optimised so that security incidents and vital video footage are not missed/lost.  In certain types of CNI application i.e. Nuclear/Utilities, sites are also often located in harsh environments where cameras can be difficult to access, without significant health and safety risk.

The ability for users and maintainers to be able to remotely reboot connected devices as well highlight potential/current faults in the security network using intuitive, diagnostic tools from within Genetec Security Center, can dramatically increase system uptime, reduce health and safety risk and transform the overall support of CNI related security sites.

Transportation

Transportation

In all areas of transport, whether it be for Airport/Port Security or Traffic Management, access to cameras can involve costly permissions, escorts and/or even road closures. There is often also a need to hire plant equipment and/or work at high level.

The ability for users and maintainers to be able to remotely reboot connected devices as well highlight potential/ current faults in the security network using intuitive, diagnostic tools from within Genetec Security Center, can dramatically reduce costs and increase efficiencies in Transport sector projects.

Public Space/Safety

barox recognises the challenges faced by Public Safety stakeholders and have focused our innovation on building in features and monitoring tools to increase network management capability and efficiencies across the whole of the IP network.

All of these tools are accessible as a single user interface, via Genetec Security Center.  The cost benefits of combined barox/Genetec integration is therefore a compelling offering for Public Safety environments.

Features and benefits

Features:

  • Via Genetec Security Center, barox switches monitor the whole of thesecurity network including all 3rd party devices
  • Alarms delivered directly to Genetec Security Center and via SMTP
  • Remote re-boot of offline IP devices, can be either manually or autonomously
  • Engineers can diagnose issues to device level before attending site
  • Enhanced Cyber security – built-in firewall features, IP source-guarding etc

End user and channel partner benefits

  • Management of the whole of the security network via a single user interface i.e. Genetec Security Center
  • Reduced site visits = reduced support costs and reduced health & safety risk
  • Flexible resources = Highly qualified network engineers are not needed to resolve issues
  • Proactive monitoring features = increased system uptime
  • Ease of use = No specialist/expensive network qualifications required to support/maintain network

Solution architecture

The architecture of the solution is shown in the diagram below. It is made up of a back-end system which acts as a proxy server between the Security Center plug-in (for Configurator Tool and Security Desk) and the barox switches. This service uses the SNMP protocol for communication with the barox switches.

As a data store for the solution, an MSSQL database is being used to hold information such as configuration, switch, and port mapping.

For Administrators, there is a new tool for the Config Tool application, which helps configure new switches and add in port mapping information.

For Users with the appropriate credentials, there is a tile button on the video stream to allow device/PoE reboot.
