Modbus protocol

The IIoT integration to Security Center opens a new world of connectivity within the Genetec ecosystem. Modbus is a communication protocol used by electronic devices to transmit data to a computer. The Modbus plugin is a software created by Genetec Inc. that turns Security Center into a Modbus client application. Using Security Desk, operators can monitor and respond to the state changes from building automation devices, heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) control systems, fire panels, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) devices, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Operators receive event notifications when a threshold is met, such as the temperature in a server room is too high, a motor overheats, or system pressure is below or above normal operating levels. Security Center can be configured to trigger event-to-actions in response to data changes, such as turning on the air conditioning, turning off an overheated motor, and sending an email requesting a maintenance crew go to the pipeline. When Security Center includes video cameras, operators can see what is happening by viewing live and recorded video of the areas where the Modbus devices are located.

Industrial applications

Leveraging existing infrastructure within your facilities such as Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and connect them with Security Center to receive any alerts risen from the assembly line and send special commands back to the PLCs. You can receive data from these connected devices to know their states and values, monitoring it all in one Security Center dashboard. Configure each sensor status to have specific actions triggered in Security Center. Further enhance your operations by triggering rules or event-to-actions in Security Center to guide operators through situations such as when an emergency stop button is pressed on the line.

Power utilities

Modbus is a common protocol used with devices in vertical industries such as power, mining, or oil & gas. With the Industrial IoT Modbus protocol integration, you can bring the data from those devices in Genetec. Configure additional rules to trigger internal events or write actions back to the Modbus devices in the remote locations overseeing the facilities. The events can be combined with other internal triggers, video streams, incidents, workflows, etc. to provide a unified experience to the operator.

Solution architecture

Devices that use the Modbus-TCP protocol to communicate the Modbus plugin. In response to requests from the plugin, the Modbus devices reply with their current data and state of its coils, discrete inputs, input registers, and holding registers. The Modbus integration is installed on Config Tool and Security Desk workstations. The Security Center administrator uses Config Tool to create and configure the plugin role. Security Desk operators can view state changes in real time on maps.

Features and benefits

  • Add Modbus devices and registers to Security Center as data points.
  • Monitor the data and state changes of connected Modbus registers.
  • Set up rules that trigger custom events in response to selected state and data changes.
  • Configure custom actions to send commands from Security Center to the Modbus device.
  • Leverage event-to-actions in response to custom event from Modbus inputs.
  • Display Modbus entities and custom states icons on the Security Center map.
  • Generate reports of historical data to help you identify trends.
