License Plate Recognition Software embedded within AXIS cameras
VaxALPR On Camera is the full Vaxtor OCR engine which has been ported to run on the latest Axis and Mobotix camera processors. The software variants will read license plates, ADR Plates (Hazardous substances) or ISO Container Codes in real time.
Vaxtor's powerful OCR engine has been tuned to run efficiently on board the latest Axis and Mobotix cameras whilst achieving the same level of recognition normally found in high-end processor architectures such as Intel.
At present the only constraint is a slightly lower maximum speed of vehicles and not the scene complexity. For most ALPR situations where VaxALPR On Camera is deployed, the accuracy will be equally high.
OCR configuration takes place through the standard camera menu by using a Web browser.

Access Control and Security
As the world becomes more security conscious, there is a need to monitor and control vehicle access to many high security areas including airports, military bases, corporate HQs, industrial estates, 24-hour transport hubs etc.
VaxALPR On Camera addresses this by using advanced OCR technology running on board Axis and Mobotix cameras to capture and record the license plates of every vehicle entering/exiting from a site. Plates are read in real time as vehicles approach and can be checked against white or blacklists. Barriers can be controlled directly from the camera and alarms sounded to alert staff.
Running the ALPR software at the edge reduces network bandwidth and expensive server costs.
Video captured on Security Center can be bookmarked with these reads so that users can search for particular vehicles and view the corresponding video of vehicles and drivers.
The software allows security personnel to record and accurately control the movements of any members of staff, visitors, contractors or deliveries.
Container Code Recognition
Shipping containers are seen in all parts of the world as they are moved around by road, rail or sea. Recording these movements is a real challenge as their markings are often very hard to read.
This text can be very hard to read, – but Vaxtor's Container Recognition software running on board Axis cameras uses advanced OCR techniques to accurately read the ISO horizontal and vertical lettering found on all containers, sending all data to Helix, Vaxtor's BOF, where they can be stored and later searched.
Note that when running on-board an Axis camera the container must be moving very slowly. The On PC solution will read faster moving freight.
Video captured on Security Center can be bookmarked with these container reads so that users can search for any container and view the matching video clips as each container was seen.
The Container Code application allows port operators and transportation companies to record the exact time and place each container was seen allowing forensic searching as and when needed.
Transportation
The transport industry is huge and millions of trucks use our road networks every day. Some of them contain dangerous goods and in Europe they must display the orange ADR plates.
In the USA commercial vehicles must display a USDOT number which often appears on the doors of trucks and can be written in almost any font! It can be very important to know if such vehicles are currently in a tunnel, section of road or a compound.
Vaxtor's neural net OCR technology runs on board Axis cameras and can read both these types of plates in addition to the license plate and send them to Helix, Vaxtor's BOF, for storage. Alarms can be generated whenever an ADR plate is seen.
Video of these vehicles showing exactly what type of truck is involved (and optionally the driver) can be bookmarked with these reads to allow users to review any video associated with each event
The ADR & USDOT plugins dramatically increase the usefulness of the ALPR system and can for example warn tunnel or transport operators of any potential danger.
Parking Management
The global parking market continues to steadily rise as land becomes more expensive and traffic continues to increase. Drivers use ingenious methods to avoid paying for parking and ALPR is an effective tool in managing this.
VaxALPR runs on board Axis and Mobotix cameras positioned at the entrances and exits of car parks, reading the license plates in real time as vehicles approach. Data is sent to 3rd party parking back offices for payment processing or to Helix where the sanctions plugin can interface with fine processing packages. High accuracy is imperative and vehicles can sometimes be from more than one state or even country. Reading different types of plates is important.
Video can be captured on Security Center of each vehicle approaching and can optionally record the driver's face. The video can be bookmarked with plate reads so that management can search for any recent vehicles and review the details of the event. This is important when fines or charges are challenged
Law Enforcement
Most crimes are linked to vehicles in some way and most criminals will have cars. These can be used to survey potential crime sites or used to commit crimes.
VaxALPR running on board Axis cameras can be used to survey sensitive sites, key roads or protect villages or towns. Plates can be captured at high speed and can trigger instant alarms or automatically send emails to interested parties. Vehicle images and recorded live video can be watermarked with plate, date and location stamps for security and this data, including images of vehicles and drivers, can be sent to police BOFs using JSON, UTMC or a variety of other secure reporting options.
On-board ALPR systems can download daily hotlists and warn police drivers of passing vehicles of interest.
Video of these events can be captured on Security Center and bookmarked with the plate reads so that police or security investigators can perform searches on any captured plates and review the accompanying video.
