Privacy without compromising security

The top priority for any law enforcement agency is to keep citizens safe, which means they often have to collect and manage video footage to support investigations.

Complying with government regulations while respecting the expectation of privacy is crucial to ensuring that citizens’ rights are respected throughout video surveillance operations. Collecting footage with privacy in mind protects individuals without sacrificing their security.

Staying up to date with privacy regulations

In recent years, governments around the world have introduced new regulations to prioritize privacy rights and ensure that personal data is collected and managed with privacy in mind.

The European Union implemented the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in 2018 to manage how organizations collect, use, and share the personal data of their citizens. Many governments followed suit and created regulations to protect privacy rights, including the General Data Protection Law (LGPD) in Brazil and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA).

Law enforcement agencies often need to collect personal data, as well as footage of individuals in public spaces, to ensure security. But to meet the public's expectations of privacy and to align with global regulations, access to this data or footage needs to be restricted and protected.

Ensuring security without compromising privacy

Law enforcement agencies are implementing solutions that connect devices and operations, helping to break down silos between different departments or agencies. This enhances communication and investigations, but it also means that you may need to adjust the way you manage video data, to ensure that only authorized users have access to the original footage.

Video anonymization features allow you to collect and share video while prioritizing the privacy rights of citizens.

Customizing video pixel anonymization

KiwiVision™ Privacy Protector™, a module of Genetec™ Security Center, can enhance the way you collect and share footage to help you address citizens’ concerns about their privacy rights.

The module allows you to dynamically anonymize individuals in the camera’s field of view in real time, without obscuring their actions or movements. You can also customize static privacy zones in specific areas of the camera’s field of view, as well as adjust the pixel colors to better protect citizens’ identities. This ensures you can proactively monitor events while respecting the privacy rights of each individual captured on camera.

If an incident occurs, authorized operators can access the footage directly from the Security Center monitoring interface, and even encrypt the original video for added security.

Restricting access to original footage

Privacy Protector allows you to secure footage through encryption so that only authorized can access the original, un-pixelated copy. When an incident occurs, authorized operators can access the module to ensure that investigations are not slowed down. You can also use security certificates to encrypt the original recording and provide another line of defense against unauthorized access.

An activity trail is also maintained to track who viewed which footage. This allows you to control access to the original video throughout investigations, as well as keep a record of the chain of custody, which can be handy for post-investigation work or as proof of compliance.
