Montreal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL) enhances passenger experience

To adapt to future growth plans and better control airport perimeters, Aéroports de Montréal (ADM) deployed the Security Center unified platform. Now their teams efficiently manage video surveillance and automatic license plate recognition systems from one central place.

The company

ADM manages and operates the facilities of Montreal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL) and Montreal-Mirabel International Airport (YMX). As the third largest airport in Canada, YUL handles almost 55,000 passengers a day, or almost 20 million a year. By 2025, ADM is expecting to welcome over 25 million passengers. And by 2030, that number is projected to keep growing once a new terminal for the light metro transit system called Metropolitan Express Network (REM) opens at the airport. ADM oversees 13,000 employees and works with several partners, such as the Canadian Air Transport Security Agency (CATSA) and the Montreal Police Service (SPVM).

The challenge

ADM has big expansion plans on the horizon. To be able to adapt to upcoming changes, the company knew it was time to modernize its security systems. They wanted to have better control over airport perimeters and offer an exceptional experience to all airport visitors. Ease of use and performance were must-haves. More specifically, ADM wanted to streamline vehicle traffic, obtain relevant and real-time information to improve decision-making. Having the ability to merge many systems together and gather data within a single unified platform would allow them to make more informed and detailed plans to improve operations.

The solution

High-resolution video

"The virtual tracking system in the Security Center Omnicast™ system has exceptional image quality. When a security call comes in, we can intervene quickly,” says Jean-Marc Debon, Investigator.

Safe and efficient parking

Security Center AutoVu™ and Free-Flow helps ADM to identify unauthorized vehicles and efficiently manage parking lots. It also calculates the amount of time it takes a vehicle gets from one point to another.

video monitoring station

Airport vehicle tracking

Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) creates virtual geolocated barriers and alerts the team when a bus, for example, deviates from its route or exceeds the authorized speed.

One view of multiple systems

Federation-as-a-Service centralizes monitoring, while reducing on-site hardware and time spent administering systems. With this cloud service, there’s no need to maintain physical servers.

"The fact that everything is merged into one platform gives our operators a wealth of information that we used to have to look for in three or four different systems."

Daniel St-Pierre

Deputy Director, Operations & IT Security, Aéroports de Montréal

Results

Today, the ADM team is managing 1,350 cameras from 200 client workstations using the Genetec Security Center unified platform. “The added value is having all of our technologies in one place. We have a big- picture view of our security and we are becoming more efficient, "said Danny Coveney, Deputy Director, Airport Operations and Security.

The integration was done with the help of Siemens, a company recognized for its ability to implement robust, secure, and energy-efficient infrastructure. "Customers have found the Security Center platform to be very intuitive, and the solution is innovative and scalable," said Bruno Labonté, Project Manager at Siemens.
